Performing Arts Medicine

As a working artist with 30+ years of experience in ballet and contemporary dance, Dr. Alana Rogers is your performing arts medicine specialist. Dr. Rogers serves artists of all levels from amateur to professional. She has treated dancers of various styles from ballet to hip hop to Irish dance; circus artists including pole dancers and aerialists; and musicians including classical viola players, electric bass players and guitarists, percussionists, and even a Chinese zither player. 


Why is it important for performing artists to see a performing arts medicine specialist?

Dr. Rogers understands the training demands of performing artists and speaks their language. She has the ability to identify specific RTS/return-to-sport (aka return-to-stage) guidelines for your individual artistic needs. Here are some examples. 

  • In addition to looking at your single leg squat, heel raise, and hopping mechanics, she will examine your plié, relevé, and petite allegro. 

  • Dr. Rogers will ask you to bring your musical instrument to your PT session to evaluate your posture and mechanics while playing. 

  • She will request X-rays in dance-specific positions, possibly in your pointe shoes, to understand the source of your ankle pain. 

  • She will request videos of you working with your apparatus if you are an aerialist. 

  • She will ask you to explain your training load across performances, rehearsals, classes or lessons, and non-arts work.

  • She works closely with like-minded professionals in the medical and fitness fields to keep you on track with your goals. As a team, we will NEVER tell you to “quit” or “pick a new hobby.” 


Dr. Rogers provides lectures and workshops on dance medicine to dancers, dance teachers, and other medical and allied health professionals. She has presented at the Dance Educators Association of Washington (DEAW) conference, Velocity Dance Center’s Strictly Seattle, Tara Academy of Irish Dance, and SeaPAM’s journal club. Recent lectures have included:

  • Injury prevention, warm-up and stretching techniques

  • Performance conditioning

  • Top 10 conditioning exercises for dancers

  • Return to jumping

  • Joint health and joint centering, special focus on the hip joint

Dr. Alana Rogers lives and breathes mountains. She is an avid hiker and understands the physical demands needed for ascending and descending mountains. She will work with you to define individual fitness and strength goals related to elevation gain, mileage, terrain, pack weight, and temperature. She loves snow and her avalanche beacon. She is a member of the Seattle Mountaineers and has Wilderness First Aid certification.

  1. Sea kayaking and camping through glaciers in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska 

  2. Snow camping and building a snow cave in 10° F weather with a -5° F wind chill at Mt. Baker, WA

  3. Backpacking alongside many, many mountain goats in the Enchantments in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, WA

  4. Snowshoeing out of Paradise to Mazama Ridge on Mt. Rainier on New Year’s Day

  5. Trekking in the jungle-filled and humid hillsides of Thailand

  6. Everything Glacier National Park, Montana

  7. Glissading down from Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier and getting the friction burn to prove it

  8. Kayaking with porpoises and flying rays in Costa Rica

  9. Hiking amongst golden larches and snow flurries in North Cascades National Park, WA

Lower Extremity

Dr. Alana Rogers has a special interest in treating lower extremity conditions because of her background as a professional dancer. The joints and structures of the lower body are under the most stress in the dancer’s body and thus, are most-commonly injured. Throughout her training and career as a dancer, Dr. Rogers has personally experienced injuries such as patellar tendonitis, hip tendinopathy, and hip impingement. 


Treating these areas is a personal passion for her - but don’t worry, she also treats the whole body from head to toe! She would be pleased to see you for your spine, shoulders and arms. The body is interconnected and no part works in isolation. At Seattle Ortho Arts PT, we believe in treating the whole kinetic chain to get at the root of your concerns.

Yoga benefits nearly every aspect of our wellbeing, from balance and strength to mental health and mindfulness. Dr. Alana Rogers regularly uses yoga poses and sequences in her rehabilitation programs with a focus on sound alignment, breath, movement quality, and stamina. She uses yoga as a tool to teach safe stretching techniques with an overarching goal of joint preservation and soft tissue health. She heavily incorporates props such as bolsters, yoga blocks, and straps to make yoga accessible for any body, no matter their flexibility level. 


In her own practice of yoga, Dr. Rogers finds a better ability to be present, focus inwards, and alleviate anxiety. She has practiced Vinyasa, Bikram, Yin, and dipped her toes into Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga. She practiced pre-natal and post-natal yoga around pregnancy and believes yoga to be a wonderful complement to that journey.
